Liz Pollman, Registered Nurse, Case Manager started in March, 2016. Liz chose hospice care because it’s a unique type of healthcare. She shares, “In healthcare, it is always ‘fix and correct to heal.’ In hospice care, I only do ‘quality of life.’ I get to make people comfortable and happy to have a good death. I don’t want my people to suffer, so I make them happy and comfortable. That’s why I choose hospice care and Hospice of Southern Illinois.” One of her favorite parts of her job is saying hello for the first time and seeing the look of relief come over the family. She adds how much she love’s saying, “We are here to help support you and make you comfortable.”
Beyond Liz Pollman’s ability to relate to families, reassure them, and communicate challenging unknowns that may be ahead, she is one of the most helpful, team-oriented, and selfless people you will ever get to know. The combination of her nursing experience and customer service makes her a perfect fit to Hospice of Southern Illinois’ team, serving patients and families. For example, hearing her speak with families on their phone and provide support and education is unmatched. Her customer service with families far exceeds expectations related to her nursing knowledge. Hospice care is much more than just clinical knowledge. It’s a service of the heart and compassion. Liz helps encompass the hospice philosophy. Additionally, asking, “What’s important today,” each day make sure her patients are receiving the dignity and respect she knows they deserve. Further, watching her provide compassionate care, making her patients smile, and helping her team makes hard days easier and worth it.
“I had a patient telling me I needed to have a ‘real-sit-at-a-table’ meal at The Mascoutah Steak House. I was not able to eat there before he passed, but I did get the chance to go there. The first time I walked in, my business card was taped to the register. There was a note from him to make sure I was well cared for. Three years later when I walked it, they give me a Coke with no ice and a really good hug! That’s why I do what I do.” Thank you Liz for your service to Hospice of Southern Illinois, this community, and others!
