One Special Gift – A St. Louis Wish
Have you ever reflected on what makes you happy? Maybe there is one activity that would make a difference in your life or provide joy during a solemn time. Everyone has something that touches their heart. Recently in 2019, a new St. Louis attraction, St. Louis Aquarium – Downtown at Union Station, grabbed the attention of one of our patients. Hospice of Southern Illinois’ nurse and the social worker asked how we could fulfill a wish for the Duvall family.
Our patient, Mrs. Duvall, wanted to go for a day trip with her family and make a special memory at the new aquarium. The St. Louis Aquarium – Downtown at Union Station donated tickets to their family. To complete the experience, the CEO of WaterMark, Brad Poole, donated a rental car for the family to drive to St. Louis. Then, Matt Mochino from Monchino Management, LLC, connected us to Hotel Indigo St. Louis – Downtown, who provided a 2-night stay. The patient’s son and daughter-in-law commented how they were sent “in style,” in a 2019 fully loaded Escalade. This was important because the SUV was perfect for the patient’s wheelchair and the family’s bags to fit comfortably for the ride to St. Louis.
The philosophy of hospice care is quality of life at the end-of-life. Centered around quality of life, the memories made on this trip will be shared for years to come. With the help of some generous people, Hospice of Southern Illinois granted one special gift. It is truly wonderful when people come together to bring joy to families who need it most.
