Hospice of Southern Illinois hosted a Facebook Live: Folding of the Flag ceremony on June 11th as part of our commitment to the We Honor Veterans program. We’d like to extend a special thank you to everyone who made this day possible. Thank you, Veterans, Edward Martinez and Karen Ridge, from SGT Charles A Fricke VFW Post 805 O’Fallon IL; Hospice of Southern Illinois’ founding volunteer and veteran, Adrienne Villotti; Hospice of Southern Illinois’ veteran-to-veteran volunteer, Valerie Young; and President and CEO, Amy Richter. The We Honor Veterans partnership promotes veteran-centric activities and education between local organizations. These organizations can include hospices, funeral homes and service organizations in collaboration with the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Hospice of Southern Illinois sought an opportunity to engage our online community. Facebook Live helped us connect with people we have not been able to see during the stay-at-home order. Education and awareness about the 13-steps to folding the flag, and a flag dedication were included in the live ceremony.
The flag dedication recognized founding volunteer, former board member, and Air Force veteran, Adrienne Villotti of Mascoutah, Illinois. She read a beautiful poem about the flag. After her poem, we surprised and honored her with a framed flag. The flag was graciously donated by Hoffen Funeral Home in Millstadt, Illinois.
