Deb Hunter

February 26, 2021

In 2021, Hospice of Southern Illinois is celebrating 40 years of caring. When looking at the past 40 years of the rich history of the organization, Deb Hunter has been an employee for 28 years. Deb has worn several hats at Hospice of Southern Illinois. She began her career on July 27, 1992, as a Field Staff Nurse. A Field Staff Nurse cares for patients in their home and home like setting. After 19 years as a Field Staff Nurse, an opportunity became available for a Volunteer Services Supervisor position. She stepped in the Volunteer Service Supervisor role for just shy of two years.

With the growth of the organization and the increased patient care needs, an Intake Nurse position was created in the Marion office. Deb was up for the new role. The Intake Nurse is the first “voice” to coordinate hospice services and offer support to help patients and families. Deb then returned to the hands-on care she desperately loved as a Field Staff Nurse.

As we mentioned, Deb enjoys patient care very much. Hospice care is always changing and there is always a need for experienced hospice nurses with a special heart, background, and expertise. Deb transitioned back into the role as an Intake Nurse. With her background and experience with Hospice of Southern Illinois throughout the years, she knows the value in coordinating with all parties.

Deb knew she needed to be at Hospice of Southern Illinois to help the families to deal with the dying process and make the end of life an easier transition. Deb enjoyed going to patient’s homes as a Field Staff Nurse. She loved the fact she was welcomed as family member. Further, she feels as though she has made so many friends in her current position as an intake nurse. Deb also enjoys working with the case managers at the hospitals. Most of all, she loves her coworkers! Hospice of Southern Illinois has found a treasure in Deb Hunter who, above all, makes a point to improve the quality of everyone’s life she comes into contact with every day.

Deb Hunters favorite quote is by Dr. Seuss, “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”
